Gold-Filled Jewellery on the Gold Coast

Handcrafted on the Gold Coast, designed to be worn every day, in the sun, in the water, and everywhere in between.

The Gold-Filled Difference

Gold-Filled vs. Plated: What's the Difference?

Gold-filled jewellery is made by mechanically bonding a thick layer of real gold to a base metal core, at a weight of at least 5%, or 1/20, gold. Unlike gold plating, which is a wafer-thin layer that can wear away within months, gold-filled pieces are made to last for years of daily wear. It's why we build every Mae Bespoke piece this way.

Frequently asked questions

What does "gold-filled" actually mean?

Gold-filled jewellery is made by permanently bonding a thick layer of solid 14K gold to a brass core using heat and pressure. Unlike gold plating, which is a microscopically thin layer that wears away quickly, gold-filled contains 100 times more gold - so it keeps its colour and shine for years, even with everyday wear on the Gold Coast.

Can I wear it swimming, showering or at the beach?

Yes. Gold-filled is far more water-resistant than plated jewellery, making it ideal for the beach, pool and daily showers. That said, we recommend giving pieces a quick rinse in fresh water after swimming in salt water or chlorine, then pat dry to keep them looking their best for years to come.

Is gold-filled jewellery hypoallergenic?

Yes. Because the outer layer is genuine gold rather than a base metal or plating, gold-filled jewellery is naturally gentle on sensitive skin and won't cause the redness, itching or green marks that cheaper alloys can.

How do I care for my gold-filled jewellery?

Keep your gold-filled pieces looking their best by storing them flat or hanging when not in use, avoiding harsh chemicals like chlorine and perfume, and giving them an occasional wipe with a soft, dry cloth. With this simple care, they'll stay beautiful for years.

Is gold-filled worth it compared to solid gold?

Absolutely. Gold-filled offers the look, feel and longevity of solid gold at a fraction of the price, without the fragility of gold plating. It's a smart, affordable way to build a jewellery collection that lasts.
